This work is inspired by the short chapter “Excursus on the Sense of Time” from Thomas Mann’s novel “The Magic Mountain.”
“To be sure, habit has its compensations. What time must it be now? For two or three hours one’s time-sense has been extinguished, now it wakes again and what one thought of as ‘this afternoon’ turns out to be a few minutes only… If one measures time in large units, breadth, weight, and volume are assigned to its passage. Then eventful years pass much more slowly than empty, poverty-stricken, and idle ones that seem to blow away like the wind.”
What might we discover if we dissect someone’s life into small units and observe it from a fresh perspective?
Three people living in Seoul were selected and asked to note what they were doing and thinking every hour for three days (72 hours).
Upon arrival at the performance venue, the audience receives a tablet and headphones instead of a seat ticket, embarking on their own unique journey. Following the sounds in the headphones and the directions in the video, they find themselves immersed in someone else’s life, experiencing a sense of estrangement in a bustling space. The audience will discover their own time in this contemplative space, walking through the stories placed by the artist.
