Ansan, a local city, is the first planned city in South Korea. Under the enforcement of the government, the existing villages were cleared, and a new industrial city was created as if drawing on a blank canvas. Ansan has had a railway since the Japanese colonial era, and now a subway runs along a similar route. The trains might be the only ones remembering the history of the old city disappearing and the new one emerging. Residents of Ansan introduced us to places filled with their memories. Many of these places have vanished, but they remain in people’s memories, perhaps becoming ‘ghosts of space’ that wander around.
The audience boards the first car of the subway, moving through the train and encountering the ‘ghosts of space’ as the train crosses the city. Each car of the subway represents a chapter. As the audience moves through the subway, they watch videos on ipad and live performances happening in each car. An iPad-application was developed using Bluetooth devices to ensure that each time they move to the next car, the next story seamlessly begins. At the end of the journey, everyone disembarks and discovers an object that connects them with the ghosts and other audience members. They are connected without words and must figure out how to move together.
